➤ Character
Name: Ris Bancroft
Canon: Original
Canon Point: Several months after her escape attempt, prior to meeting anyone else she might consider a friend.
Age: 19

History:

cw: abuse (both emotional and physical), disfiguration, severe medical malpractice

Ris was not born so much as she was made.

Her creator, Dr. Varen Bancroft, was possessed of a brilliant scientific mind. With his focus set in advancing past human limitations, his public-facing work was seen as perhaps a bit much, but highly praised when he did find results. With such pedigree, he was eventually commissioned to help try to heal a young programming genius of her chronic illnesses, so that her brilliance could be made useful in the years to come. It was easy enough work for someone like him, and it paid the bills, so Dr. Bancroft accepted.

Behind the scenes, however, Dr. Bancroft was hardly an upstanding citizen. Early into his career, he had met and become close with a demi-god by the name of Aero. Inspired by that power, Dr. Bancroft went down a dark path of study. Human experimentation came to be his bread and butter, with efforts focused in cloning, body modifications, and even modifications of the human soul. His end goal was to eventually elevate himself to the level of his beloved colleague by his own power. Of course, such research and development is particularly time-consuming, and it wasn't as if this was his only job. Constant meetings with his young "client" became irritating at best.

So, without obtaining any consent, because why would he do that, Dr. Bancroft obtained some of his client's DNA — a task which wasn't at all difficult, given their relationship — and cloned her. Whenever his client fell ill, Dr. Bancroft would artificially sicken her clone the same way, and then come up with a cure with his far less "publicly appropriate" methods.

Which is to say that the clone, Ris, was basically tortured regularly. When she wasn't, she was forced to act as an assistant or maid.

Ris was never made aware of her status as a clone. Instead, Dr. Bancroft referred to her exclusively as a "doll," and — rather creepily — even went so far as to dress her up like one, favoring lolita-style clothing for her. As a result, Ris genuinely grew to believe she was subhuman. The doctor's cruel treatment otherwise even made her believe that perhaps she deserved all of the pain she went through.

Even so, the second an escape opportunity presented itself, Ris took it. However, given her lack of experience with the outside world, she was quick to be discovered and dragged back to the laboratory that had become her prison. The doctor did not take her disobedience lightly, either. In an act of pure cruelty, he removed her right eye, claiming it made her match his own disfiguration and that it tied the two together inseparably.

Now, Ris constantly wears a medical-grade eyepatch to cover up the damage done to her, and just carries out her duties day-to-day while keeping her head down in the hopes that it keeps her out of any further trouble. She hasn't completely given up hope of one day escaping and finding a better life, and she still dreams that someone might swoop in and rescue her. But until then, she's just determined to keep herself alive, no matter how miserable an existence it may be.

Personality:

Ris might initially come across as a somewhat quiet young woman; thoughtful and unfailingly polite. However, under that façade lies a bitter, hateful and distrusting person who's just looking for any excuse she can find to lash back out on a world that's completely failed her.

Strengths

  • Loyal

Ris may not be the easiest person to win over, but once you have her trust, she will follow you into hell itself if that's what you ask of her. The people Ris grows to love are more important to her than literally anything else in the world, in any world. Anything that needs to be done to keep her people safe is something she will do without question or hesitation, no matter what that means for her own well-being.

Perhaps this is a weakness just as much as it is a strength, but one can't underestimate the strength in bonds.

  • Careful

Ris is not one to jump right into something without a plan. She is, however, someone who will get irritated when the people around her try to do exactly that. Instead, Ris is likely to try to herd the metaphorical cats and sit them down to work out an actual, detailed plan of attack. Ideally, one that will keep people safe. She's already made what she considers to be some pretty grievous errors herself, she isn't willing to let other people waltz right into the same or worse.

  • Realistic

Just as Ris isn't willing to jump in head first, Ris is also not one to be overly optimistic about the nature of her work. It might make her a bit of a downer, but it also means she'll be the one bringing concerns to the table that others might not have thought through, because Ris is always considering the ways that things could go wrong. And, well... even with "unlimited lives," so to speak, the nature of their work in Teyvat is such that there is quite a lot that could go wrong.

Weaknesses

  • Distrustful

Given Ris' experience with socializing, it's probably not surprising that her immediate reaction to anyone new is Trust No One. The only thing she's ever gotten out of other people before is pain, so why SHOULD she trust?

Unfortunately, she's hard to win over even if someone's trying. She assumes that any kindness shown is a lie, and will reject it outright. It's not until someone who has been kind to her also lashes back out at her for her behavior that she actually trusts their words, because in her mind by breaking the mask of kindness they've proved themselves as being "true."

She's, uh, got some issues to work through.

  • Combative

Not only does Ris not trust anyone, she also goes out of her way to provoke them. Her initial veneer of politeness is very quick to go overboard and get pretty uncomfortable for others, and it's not like she doesn't know this — she's doing it all on purpose, trying to get a reaction. Not only that, but while she pretends to be amiable, her words are often laced with passive-aggressive poison, doing her best to dig at any wounds people make the mistake of wearing on their sleeves.

Not only does she want people to lash out at her to prove themselves, but she's looking for any excuse she can get to be even slightly as awful to others as has been done to her. Sure, all she has is a sharp tongue, but that won't stop her from using it for all she can get.

  • Prone to violence

So remember how, under "strengths," it mentioned how Ris was loyal perhaps to a fault? Yeah. This is the fault.

Under no circumstances should someone attempt to mess with someone Ris has decided she cares for, because while Ris is not particularly strong, she absolutely will not hesitate to literally cut someone if she can find a way to get at them. Most people have some kind of moral code that says that violence is wrong, but not Ris — violence is all she's ever known. Until someone can give her a damn good reason why stabbing people is wrong, they should probably be very, very afraid.

Greatest Motivations

  • Freedom

Ris has lived her whole life as... well, let's be honest, basically a slave. It should come as no surprise, then, that one of her greatest wishes is to be free of all of that.

It's not that simple, though. While that is something she wants, it's also something she fears. Her escape attempt has made it clear to her that she really has no idea how to get by on her own, and she's been so thoroughly warped by her experiences that she finds a comfort in being ordered around. So while she wants to be free, it's not really pure freedom she wants... it's more like she just wants someone kinder to direct her in life.

...It's a step forward, at least.

  • Love

Ris may not trust easily, but that doesn't mean she doesn't want to be accepted by others. She may not trust kindness, but she craves it, and at her core she wants nothing more than for someone to care for and love her.

Platonic or romantic? Doesn't matter. She doesn't even really care if it's real. So long as she can pretend, so long as she can have a facsimile of those warm, soft feelings she thinks are supposed to indicate love, she'll be happy.

Mundane Interests

  • Sewing

Ris has always been dressed up like her "master's" little doll, and she hates it. Because she's been trained in various houseworking skills, she does know the basics of sewing, and the idea of being able to make her own garments and decide on her own personal style is something fascinating to her.

  • Learning to cook

Ris can cook, but she only really knows how to prepare very bland meals, because that's all Dr. Bancroft would ever eat. How does one use spices? Please enlighten her to this strange and terrifying magic.

  • Reading and learning in general

Having been so isolated, Ris is very intrigued by the world around her, and will absolutely devour any kind of information she can get her hands on. It's an easy way to gain some of the skills and knowledge she fears she lacks to make it in the world on her own, after all!

...Which isn't to say she doesn't like fiction. Please give her all of the trashy romance novels, she loves them.

New Setting

Wake up in the morning feeling like OH GOD WHERE AM I PANIC PANIC PANIC

Ris will very likely need to go suffer through a genuine panic attack at first, because her immediate thought is that there is no way this can mean anything good. But once she calms down, and she eventually will, she'll tentatively head out into the world and try to talk to others and figure out just what the hell is going on. Between conversations, she'll probably try to deduce what she can on her own, but she definitely isn't afraid of asking for at least basic information.

Abilities:

  • Skilled in basic household chores and such, if anyone happens to need a maid to help out with stuff

  • Absolutely fantastic at your everyday fetch quests or carrying out any other basic orders given to her

  • Tactical mindset

  • Latent reality-warping powers as a result of modifications made to her in her laboratory prison that will literally never be regained

  • Inventory: Everything that your character has on their person and will bring into the game.

    • The clothes on her back. Somewhat military lolita-esque.

    • A butterfly knife with an elaborate carving of a butterfly into the handles.

    Vision: Hydro
Reason: Ris may not have her eyes set on some kind of "greater cause," but she is unfailingly loyal to those she comes to love. That loyalty is what defines her path forward.
Role: Honestly, I think Ris would work best focusing on debuffs on the enemy. She's going to need to hang towards the back because frankly she's just not physically capable of handling being in the front lines of an RPG party, but she's also just the kind of person who would definitely find her niche in making an enemy's life miserable versus helping out the party.
    Constellation: A butterfly knife.

HAHA WHOOPS that's what i get for having written 3/4 of this app when the game first opened huh

Contract: All Ris wants is confirmation that under no circumstance will he ever send her back to the world she came from. She thinks far enough ahead to think that maybe she won't want to stay in Teyvat, so she won't limit herself to that, but so long as Forneus won't send her back to what she considers hell? She'll do anything.
