➤ Character
Name: Serpico.
Canon: Berserk.
Canon Point: Volume 19, shortly after returning to the Tower of Conviction after the Holy Iron Chain Knights break up the pagan ceremony.
Age: 20.

History: Wiki link!

Personality:
Weaknesses/strengths:

➺ Adaptive (+/-): Serpico's defining trait, both for better and for worse, would probably be his highly adaptive nature. A lifetime of being forced into various roles that he never asked for has made him tremendously malleable, and Serpico is capable of filling basically any niche he's required to in a near-effortless fashion. Whether he's expected to be a submissive servant or a steely-gazed knight enforcing the word of the Church, Serpico will abide with zero hesitation. And while this willingness and ability to adapt to his circumstances has allowed him to emerge from a brutal childhood relatively unscathed, the downside is that Serpico has been left with very little ego and sense of self.

➺ Passive (-): And tying into the above, Serpico's lack of ego means that he's highly passive by nature. Not that he's as much of a doormat as he pretends to be, but, to some degree, he's simply incapable of acting on his own. He'll always default to following the whims of others, and even when acting upon a desire of his own (i.e. protecting his mistress and secret-half-sister Farnese), he's only able to do so while maintaining the status quo. Everything he does takes place within a framework that has already been set out for him. And though this is a flaw that Serpico himself is astutely aware of, it's also not something he can shake off so easily. Partly because ...

➺ Emotionally distant (-): ... he simply lacks the strong emotions necessary to be more proactive. A childhood spent scrambling for survival and being forced to carry a pride that was constantly beaten out of him has resulted in a rather distant attitude, and regardless of however he might feel about any situation, Serpico's emotions are always subdued and placed at a low priority. This does have some pragmatic advantages, but it's a much greater handicap than it is a strength, as it means Serpico is, for the most part, incapable of feeling truly driven or motivated about anything.

➺ Dishonest (-): And just to add one last layer of obfuscation to this mess of a person, Serpico has zero qualms about lying or bluffing or presenting himself dishonestly. In fact, it seems to be his first instinct in most situations. A distinct lack of pride means he's happy to present himself as a bumbling, somewhat gormless, boot-licking lapdog. Because it means people will underestimate him and make things easier for him if he ever needs to seriously take action. He generally doesn't talk about himself much, and even when he does, he'll usually play modest or just ... straight-up lie. Not that he ever acts out of malice, or lie simply for the sake of lying. But because Serpico is a wary pragmatist who isn't really capable of feeling lonely, it's very rare for him to present himself honestly to anyone, and he doesn't really make friends.

➺ Shrewd (+): The upside to [ gestures vaguely to all of the above ] is that Serpico is a fantastically sharp individual who should never be taken lightly. On top of being a naturally intelligent and quick-thinking person, he's a calculated individual who's always aware of the risks, costs-benefits and priorities of any situation. He's capable of being recklessly brave and vicious so long as he knows there's a chance of victory, but as soon as he knows that those chances have fallen to zero, he'll beat a swift retreat; he doesn't take any actions without thinking through the consequences and costs. Having grown up both in the streets and among nobility, he's highly emotionally intelligent, with a silver tongue to go with his chameleon-like persona. A lot of people will think of him as kind of a useless weenie, but in most cases, that's only because it's exactly what he wants.

➺ Diligent (+): However! Even if he's a sly ol' fox, Serpico isn't the type to use his wits to avoid working. He's a consistently hard worker, always tending to his duties without complaint (as long as it's consistent with whatever role he's playing at the moment) and okay with doing just about anything that's asked of him. Serpico isn't used to having idle time to himself, so he'll often even take up tasks that haven't been asked of him, or add thoughtful extra touches to the work he's been assigned (again, as long as it's consistent with whatever role he's playing at the moment).

➺ Righteous (+): And lastly, though it's not necessarily a strong point in the grimdark world of Berserk where good people often unceremoniously eat shit, Serpico is, despite a highly tumultuous life ... a decent guy. He's been ordered to do some truly awful things in the past, of course, and his view of people as a whole is rather wary and cynical. But he's sympathetic towards the poor, decently chivalrous towards women and the young, and willing to lend a hand to protect people when he can. His actions are only limited by whatever role he's playing and whoever's whims he's following, but within that framework, he'll make efforts towards being a good person. Not to mention, his polite mannerisms are pretty genuine, he's generally modest and nice enough, and he isn't the type to look down on others, regardless of personal like or dislike. It's probably some indication of quiet strength of character that he's managed to maintain a relatively intact moral compass. ... mostly.

Greatest motivation:

➺ Doesn't really have one! :^) His first priority, of course, will be returning home to Farnese's side so he can continue protecting her, but that's more of a goal-oriented motivation rather than a truly intrinsic one. But if you really had to squeeze a deep, fundamental desire out of him, it would probably be 'peace'. Serpico just wants Farnese to be safe and sound and comfortable with herself. (And indirectly, that would allow him to be at ease.) 'Peace' is also something sorely lacking in the continent, so, y'know. It'd be something nice for everyone else, too. So maybe it's something worth putting a little effort towards.

Mundane interests:

➺ Serpico doesn't have much by way of personal interests! It's hard having hobbies when you spend your every waking moment catering to another person, after all. But he does seem to favor cooking a little more than most of his other servant-ly duties, if you can call that an interest.

New situations:

➺ Once he's over the shock of ending up in a supernatural situation (which, as part of a group of knights hunting down heretical witches, isn't a good look), Serpico will do what any good social chameleon does -- figure out his surroundings and get to know people. Though not friendly per se, Serpico does know the value of networking and allies, and will try to mine his new acquaintances for useful information. But at the same time, he's [ reality tv voice ] Not Here To Make Friends, so he'll probably be playing modest and trying to avoid making an impression, presenting himself as a hapless herald who's gotten caught up in these terribly complicated circumstances, haha, oh dear! (And only kick into high gear once it becomes clear that playing dumb any longer would be counterproductive.)

Abilities:
Though he largely pretends to be a charmingly bumbling everydayman, Serpico is about as well-rounded as one could expect of a good ol' normie human from the grimdark medieval ages!

➺ SWORDSMANSHIP: Serpico is an incredibly deft swordsman, capable of fending off multiple armed soldiers in an instant. His weapon of choice is the rapier, naturally gearing him towards speed and precision over power, and he's capable of some ridiculous acrobatic feats to facilitate a nimble fighting style.

➺ TRICKSY: Tying into his great adaptiveness, Serpico isn't shy about pulling some unorthodox moves during combat. He's shown to be capable of things like picking pockets on the fly and figuring out how to use an enemy's weapon against them after just one demonstration. He also has a strong throwing arm and incredible aim, and he's not above taking a shot at a pre-existing injury if he sees the chance. In other words, he will fight dirty when appropriate, and in a way that entails more than just, like ... pocket sand.

➺ WIT: Of course, it takes some pretty quick wit to be able to take advantage of circumstances like that, and Serpico has that in spades! He's shown to be a very shrewd strategist, with an eye for detail and a strong understanding of how an environment would affect the flow of battle, as well as the ability to formulate plans and adapt on the fly.

➺ MUNDANE STUFF: Outside of combat, he's the epitome of the hypercompetent underling. He's capable of just about everything one would expect from a good servant-turned-noble: cooking, cleaning, managing gear, horseriding, noble etiquette, etc. etc. It's never specified how far his education went, but as a herald of arms, he probably knows how to read and write pretty well, and has a thorough understanding of the surrounding lands' armies and banners.

➺ MAGIC POTENTIAL: Lastly, it's shown later in his canon that he has a mild affinity for magic. Though he's had little contact with magic as of his canon point, he's later shown very quickly adapting to magical weaponry and surprises even a witch with how quickly he bonds with the elementals bound to his magical weapons.

Inventory:

Just the clothes on his back (a semi-personalized set of armor in the style of the Holy Iron Chain Knights), his signature fox-style helm, and a (regular, non-magical) rapier!

Vision: Cryo.

Reason: Despite Serpico's (somewhat ironic) canon alignment with the element of wind later on in the series, I think Cryo would fit him well in terms of motivation and personality. He suffers from a marked lack of sense of self, in large part due to his rather harsh upbringing, and has filled that chasm in his heart with pragmatic, single-minded devotion to others -- most notably, his half-sister Farnese. And despite the complicated nature of their relationship, he does harbor a lot of platonic love for her. He also internally characterizes himself as having a rather icy demeanor but, underneath that cynical attitude, he's a good guy who cares about people's wellbeing, if you can call that a subdued love for humanity.

Role: Ideally hybrid DPS-support. The type of character with strong DPS potential, but also has buffing skills that can either buff himself or an ally, so you can either nuke the enemy down with him or use him to bulk up another DPS unit if you want. But if I absolutely had to pick a single role, it'd probably be support, since he's probably a bit too passive to be pure attacker.

Constellation: A fox.
