➤ Character Name: Seo Hwi Canon: My Country: The New Age Canon Point: Episode 9 - after the reunion (keeping vague for spoilers!!) Age: 24 History: The wiki is super barebones... so I'll write out a history!! If you need me to fill in any particular details just let me know!!
Hwi was born during the Goryeo period of Korea's history, right at the cusp of a new era. Hwi's father was a renowned swordsman (known notoriously as "the greatest in Goryeo") and a beloved leader to his men as both a soldier and commander for the army. Despite being well-loved, Seo Geom was put to death after being framed and charged with treason for stealing military rations. Given the choice between accepting his sentence and being boiled alive via cauldron or committing an honorable suicide, he took his own life to spare his children the disgrace his sentence would carry.
Hwi and his younger sister Yeon were abruptly alone; their mother had died years prior, leaving them to fend for themselves. Hwi took up the responsibility of raising his sister, who developed epilepsy after their father's death. Sick and in need of regular medicine, Yeon was dependent on her older brother to ensure they both survived - and so he did the best he could to make ends meet. As soon as he was old enough, he began working as a smithy spent his leisure time training with Seonho, with whom he maintained a tight and close relationship despite Seonho's social status above him (and the connotations of being associated with Hwi and Yeon, who's family was disgraced).
Fast forward a decade or so, and the State Military Exams are being held for the first time in twenty years, presenting Hwi with the opportunity of passing and providing much-needed money and stability for him and his sister. This is where the series begins and things start to take a sharp downward turn for the worse (and serious spoilers begin for anyone reading!!). For the sake of brevity (Hwi is the Main Character and things could get lengthy) I'm going to bullet-point the main events from hereon out!
Hwi and Seonho meet Huijae, who works at Ihwaru, a brothel; she has been putting up posters decrying the war/government/etc and ropes them into being associated with this transgression in a bid to avoid getting caught, causing them quite a bit of trouble. However, the three end up becoming tentative friends by the end of the night.
While signing up for the State Exam, Hwi's enrollment is denied due to his father's disgrace.
Seonho later approaches him with an offer to come along as a chaser to a hunting retreat for General Yi Seong Gye, enticing him with the possibility of catching his eye. Hwi reluctantly accepts - and inevitably, his skills in archery earn him the General's personal invitation to take the State Exam.
Hwi makes it to the final round of the exam, which pits him directly against Seonho (who, unbeknownst to him, is injured). Hwi successfully defeats him - but after he's knocked out his friend and takes the examiner's gesture as his victory, Seonho regains consciousness and blows a backhanded strike to his head. When he comes around, Seonho has been named victorious. Unable to believe what's transpired, he charges the podium and tries to argue this injustice, but he's badly beaten and removed from the examination instead.
After being picked up by Huijae and recovering at Ihwaru, Hwi witnesses Seonho's father - Nam Jeon - enjoying drinks and having a grand old time with the examiner. He puts the pieces together... the exam had been rigged by Nam Jeon to ensure Seonho took first place.
Returning home to lick his wounds, Hwi and Yeon are interrupted at dinner; Hwi is being conscripted into the military despite their absent father and Yeon's condition requiring care. Yeon suffers a seizure from the stress, injuring her head when she falls. No matter how much he screams for the soldiers to allow him to tend her or someone to assist her, he's carted away. While waiting to be shipped out for service, he learns Seonho is the one who had forcefully enlisted Hwi.
Hwi spends the next several months in Liaodong which are hell on earth. He does everything he can to survive and return to Yeon and Huijae - and Seonho, who he refuses to accept has betrayed him. Here he meets several friends, as well as a former comrade of his father's - Park Chi Do. Chi Do gives him his father's armor, which had been entrusted to him to give Hwi when he was of age.
Yi Seong Gye intends to sacrifice Hwi's advance unit in order to assist in his plans to seize the throne. The General forms a death squad - one of its members being Seonho. They come face-to-face; Seonho takes a blow intended for Hwi, saving his life but gravely injuring him. The death squad is eliminated, but Hwi and his companions (along with Seonho) are the only survivors. (Unbeknownst to him, one of the General's Captains and leader of the death squad also survives.)
They tend Seonho's wounds and cross the river, intending to return home or part ways; everyone will assume them dead. Once Seonho is recovered, the two talk and Hwi leaves after Seonho tells him Yeon is dead (she is not - currently being held at the Nam residence under his father's thumb).
The next arc of the story sees Hwi temporarily parting ways with his friends and fellow survivors of the advance party. He learns two crucial pieces of info - one: his sister is indeed alive - but she's forgotten him due to the brain injury she suffered the night he was conscripted. Two: half of a letter he found in his father's armor has important information. He gains the second half of the letter from the Madam of Ihwaru in exchange for promising to keep his distance from Huijae.
He begins working for Nam Jeon in exchange for Yeon's continued safety, and is ordered to gain the trust of and serve as a double agent for Yi Bang Won, King Yi Seong Gye's fifth son. In order to achieve this goal, Hwi risks everything in a gamble to gain Bang Won's attention - and while it almost results in everything blowing up spectacularly in his face, he inevitably earns his tentative trust and favor.
With Bang Won on his side, Hwi begins formulating a plan to free himself and Yeon from under Nam Jeon's thumb with the aid of his companions. This involves a multi-faceted ploy to fake both his death as well as Bang Won's. Shockingly, this is successful and brings Nam Jeon's misdeeds to light in front of the court - as well as the King himself. Nam Jeon is imprisoned, and Hwi can finally and safely reunite with his baby sister.
This leads up to Hwi's canon point directly after being reunited with Yeon, because I'm a kind soul.
Personality:
STRENGTHS:
Compassion & warmth. Hwi is a simple creature at heart; while his friends have lofty ambitions and possess an intense drive to reach their goals, Hwi's deepest wish is a pretty basic one - he wants to be able to put enough food on the table to feed his family, and to be with those he loves. A quiet, peaceful life sounds pretty good to him, and as the series progresses this earnest wish only becomes more apparent. His big heart and deep capacity to feel for others means he's rarely hurting for friends, and tends to make allies even in the worst of circumstances - so he's almost always surrounded by people, which is exactly where he likes to be. Once you've forged a bond with him, Hwi will fight to the death for you and do all he can to take care of you - whether that means providing a warm meal, a helping hand when you've fallen on rough times, or a joke to try and cheer you up.
Wit. Sometimes a little slow on the uptake in some social situations (like with women cough), he's otherwise a quick-witted and intelligent man who spent most of his life in pursuit of knowledge - whether that be in improving himself or his mind (with the help of his sister). Hwi demonstrates a keen observational eye and the ability to formulate deep, multi-layered plans in order to gain the favor of Bang Won, and then again to take down Nam Jeon. His quick thinking and ability to read his opponents comes in handy on the battlefield and is absolutely responsible for getting him through his time in Liaodong.
Resolve. Once Hwi has put his mind to something, it's near impossible to shake him out of it. From training to take the State Exam, to going the extra mile to ensure that his loved ones are safe, to straight-up refusing to give up on people, Hwi proves that no obstacle or amount of opposition will prevent him from reaching his end goal. He suffers countless set-backs and hardships throughout his life, but none of them erode his continual determination.
Selflessness. This man is a caretaker at heart; every day since his father's death has been spent doing his utmost to provide for his sister and work toward a better life. This often means making hard decisions or going without in order to ensure she has enough - for example, we see him putting a metal plate in his bowl to pile rice on top of and make it look like his portion is fuller than it is (even if Yeon saw through it in short order...). Time and time again Hwi puts himself in a position that causes him no shortage of pain or duress, but he will not complain or falter in the name of protecting those he cares for.
WEAKNESSES:
Anger. The world is an unfair, unjust place - Hwi understands this well, but it doesn't make this reality any easier to swallow. His father was taken from him and Yeon at a young age, and they had to struggle to keep their heads above water in a society that looked down on them as less than dirt by association with a traitor - despite Hwi and Yeon both knowing in their hearts he was a good man. Even if Hwi's bitterness is buried deep and his misgivings never clouded his ability to love, it definitely painted his perception of society and his prospects for the future. This in combination with his deep-seated sense of personal justice means that he does not stomach witnessing cruelty well. Whether its in his name or in the name of others, Hwi stands up for what he feels is right and isn't afraid to get himself in a good bit of trouble for it. This can go rather catastrophically against him - a perfect example of this being the State Exam, where the victory for first place was taken from him. Using his father's death to mock him on top of having his loss stolen sent him into a blind rage, charging the examiner and being beaten so badly he would bear scars from the event the rest of his life.
Impulsive. This often works hand-in-hand with his anger; easily impassioned, Hwi can sometimes make snap judgments, and there are many times if a friend hadn't been around to stay his hand - he would've done something drastic and terrible. Sometimes he doesn't possess the presence of mind to know when it's best to leave a situation as is and cool his head, but thankfully - he's learned to pick his battles a bit better as the years progress.
Self-sacrificing. Hwi's love is a double-edged blade, at times - though his compassion and kindness are doubtless virtues, they also sometimes result in him putting others above himself. He will often neglect taking care of himself and avoids burdening others whenever possible - not because he doesn't believe himself worthy of attention or care, but because he much rather not be a source of concern or trouble. Sometimes, everything else is just more important!! he says, before passing out (smh my head).
Greatest Motivation: Love!! Hwi is a big ol' bleeding heart; he cares about people and deeply. He's a people person who sincerely gets the most out of simply sharing pleasant company in peace. From the beginning, all he's wanted is to provide for and be with his loved ones. He'll do anything to achieve that.
Mundane Interests: Cooking! This man loves to cook and take care of others. Archery! Training! Does sitting and having a good convo count? Watching you talk about things you're passionate about is a definite interest!! Sharing good company can definitely be a hobby, right?
New Situations: Hwi would definitely be a bit skeptical at first, but he's a practical sort of guy and would be invested in figuring out his new situation. It helps he's open-minded and generally wants to see the best in people, so the prospect of coming together with others and working toward their shared goal wouldn't be hard to stomach. Eventually, he'd be pretty eager to help however he could. Abilities: Hwi is a normal human with no supernatural or spiritual abilities and powers (normie!!), but he's got some skills:
Archery: Hwi is renowned as being an excellent marksman, able to hit a target from such a great distance and with precision that only the King and former General is able to match.
Swordsmanship: His father was known as "the greatest swordsman in Goryeo," and Hwi has taken after him in his affinity for the sword. He may not be able to claim the same prowess as his father, but he's definitely skilled. Being sent to Liaodong and learning to survive on the hellish battlefield, his firsthand experience fighting for his life has honed his blade.
Tactical & Strategic ability: Hwi has learned to observe and anticipate the actions of those around him. Though it takes a great deal to motivate him to do so, he's proven himself capable of using his skills and experience to formulate plans to move multiple pieces on the proverbial board - for example, the elaborate set up to free his sister from Nam Jeon's hold, which included a plot to fake his death - as well as that of a Prince - in an extremely public fashion.
Smithy: He has worked as a blacksmith in order to provide for himself and his sister, and is proficiently skilled with a forge.
Stamina & Endurance: Hwi (and Seonho) get stabbed or otherwise maimed countless times and are able to fight through the pain. Other characters have remarked at their uncanny ability to keep going despite injury and pushing through duress.
Basic (ye olde) medical training: As part of his training for the State Exam, as well as knowledge gained taking care of his sick sister, Hwi has a good solid base of medical knowledge (herbal remedies, first aid, etc). Keep in mind this is from the Goreyo/early Joseon era so nothing too modern or cutting edge.
